Early 2022, the team at Skåne Startups has decided to transform the usual networking event Startup Coffee into an engaging workshop where guest speakers share their expertise on specific topics.

We had the opportunity to host Dan Gärdenfors, the CEO of Nobiz. Dan, a tech-savvy entrepreneur with a wealth of design experience, has dedicated the past 8 years to helping startups enhance their digital presence. Hailing from Malmö, he also serves as a Head Coach at the Sony Startup Acceleration Program.

During his talk on 'How to Design Your Own Startup Business,' Dan emphasized the importance of his first tip by citing the example of Minut, a hardware company specializing in rental property safety. He explained that conducting extensive phone calls and truly understanding the needs of rental property owners played a pivotal role in Minut's success.

According to him, fundamental market research have the potential to profoundly impact the creation of a remarkable product. He recommended reading 'The Mom Test' and revisiting it even if it had been read a decade ago.

  • Henning Gillberg, the founder of Repamera, was inspired to create his brand after conversations with people in need of tailoring services. Henning took on various tasks himself, such as collecting garments and talking to tailors, which Dan referred to as the art of 'Concierge.' The 'Concierge' approach involves being hands-on and willing to do whatever it takes to make a venture successful.
  • Another technique mentioned by Dan is the 'Wizard of Oz' strategy, which involves talking to people and building a community to learn from interactions and determine what people are willing to pay for.
  • Startups can gradually automate processes once they have gained attention and built a product that meets the audience's needs. Building a startup is compared to an iceberg, with unseen challenges lurking beneath the surface.
